What is Aquavit?

Aquavit (or Akvavit) is a spirit distilled from grain or potatoes and is produced in Scandinavian countries. Similarly to gin it is flavoured with herbs (mainly caraway and dill).

The birth of Aquavit goes back to 16th century in communication between the Danish Lord and the Norwegian bishop where Aquavit was sent as a gift with the note that this liquor will cure any illness.

Of course, in today’s world the above statement faded away in its original form, however it is still a popular drink to have in order to help digestive system after large meals.

There are five main kinds of Aquavit:

  • Danish Aquavit
  • Norwegian Aquavit (Akevitt)
  • Swedish Aquavit (Brännvin)
  • Finnish Aquavit (Koskenkorva)
  • Icelandic Aquavit (Brennivín)
